Had a frustrating experience with Horse Racing on a big race day. They suspended in-play markets 15 minutes before the off and I missed the price I wanted. Is this common practice or was it a one-off? Which bookmakers consistently keep markets open closest to the off?

Your each way calculation looks right. On a 10/1 shot at 1/4 odds 3 places: win part pays 10/1 plus your stake back. Place part pays 2.5/1 plus stake back. So 20 pound win bet returns 220 pounds, 20 pound place bet returns 70 pounds. Total if it wins: 290 pounds from 40 pound stake.

In-play suspension before the off is unfortunately common across all bookmakers on big race days — they manage risk by closing markets. Betfair Exchange is the most reliable for keeping markets open close to the off because it is peer to peer rather than book making.

For the Grand National specifically, shop around for the most generous place terms. Most major bookmakers extend to 5 places for the National. The difference between 4 and 5 places on a 40 runner field is significant — your 10/1 shot finishing 5th is worth real money.
