Had a frustrating experience with Horse Racing on a big race day. They suspended in-play markets 15 minutes before the off and I missed the price I wanted. Is this common practice or was it a one-off? Which bookmakers consistently keep markets open closest to the off?

For Cheltenham I use Betfair Exchange for the best prices on races I am confident about, and Ladbrokes for BOG on the races where I want each way cover. Best of both worlds. William Hill extending to 4 places on qualifying races is also worth keeping in the portfolio.

Your each way calculation looks right. On a 10/1 shot at 1/4 odds 3 places: win part pays 10/1 plus your stake back. Place part pays 2.5/1 plus stake back. So 20 pound win bet returns 220 pounds, 20 pound place bet returns 70 pounds. Total if it wins: 290 pounds from 40 pound stake.

In-play suspension before the off is unfortunately common across all bookmakers on big race days — they manage risk by closing markets. Betfair Exchange is the most reliable for keeping markets open close to the off because it is peer to peer rather than book making.
